PALERMO — The Oak Grove School Foundation recently presented the Palermo Community Library with a grant to fund its summer programming. The grant covers every thing from water, snacks, copying, to purchasing specific items for the programs. There is no charge to attend the following summer programs.

• Fairymainia Part Two, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, June 21. The program will feature building Fairy Houses on grounds surrounding the library. Children of all ages from Palermo and surrounding communities are invited.

• The first meeting of students for Legos is 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. The group will meet the last Wednesday of each month during the summer. A new assortment of Legos is available. An Erskine Academy student will assist Kristen Bishop in facilitating these meetings.

• Fizz, Boom, READ! is the theme for the nationwide 2014 Collaborative Summer Reading Program. With emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), this is anopportunity to introduce students to age-ppropriate science activities and books. A new assortment of science books for children is available.

• The Fizz, Boom, READ, Open House is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5. Participants can bring a T-shirt to stencil. Irene Mortko, a retired teacher in early childhood education and a summer resident of Palermo, is a facilitator for this nationwide program. At the open house, students will be grouped by age. Children from toddlers to eighth grade from Palermo and surrounding communities are invited. Toddlers will have special times, as will grades K-3 and 4-8.

• A family history, genealogy and ancestry.com course will feature numerous handouts and family forms with instructions and a high degree of hands-on experience. Classes are set for 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, starting July 15, and will continue for five weeks. Retired teacher Greg Brezicki has presented this program in Maine and Florida and has completed his extensive family history and assisted many in working on theirs. He is experienced in using ancestry.com, and Family Tree software. This course is suitable for both beginners and those who have started their research and is appropriate for middle and high school students and adults. A library volunteer experienced in using ancestry.com will be available during the week by appointment to work with individuals on ancestry.com, which is provided free at the Library.
