Northbound motorists on Interstate 95 were able to flag down a wrong-way driver Tuesday morning who then pulled over before any accidents occurred.
York police were called to the Exit 7 exit ramp off the northbound lanes at 8:49 a.m. for a report of a woman driving the wrong way on the interstate. The 85-year-old woman was headed down the off ramp toward northbound traffic.
Fortunately, traffic was light and motorists caught her attention and got her to pull over about 50 yards onto the highway, said Officer Shaun Darrow.
A Maine State Police trooper helped get her turned around and then a relative came and drove the woman home.
Darrow said the woman does not usually drive on the highway and had become confused.
Police did not cite the woman but planned to file an adverse driving report with the state which could require the woman to submit to a driving test if she continues to drive, he said.
