A West Gardiner man avoided serious injury but lost his car after he swerved to avoid a moose early Sunday and crashed in Rangeley Plantation.

Nickolas Clements, 20, was driving south on Bemis Road at 5:45 a.m. when a moose ran onto the road in front of him, according to a press release from Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols.

Clements swerved, losing control of the car, and veered off the road. The car rolled over and landed on its roof.

Clements was treated at the accident scene by NorthStar ambulance for minor cuts and scrapes, but he was not seriously hurt in the rollover.

Rangeley Fire Department also helped at the accident. The vehicle was destroyed, said Nichols.
