SPRINGVALE — A Biddeford man accused of killing his mother by running her over with his pickup truck had argued with her about money moments before he backed out of the driveway, hitting her with the open truck door, police say.

Those new details emerged Monday after Shane Jones, 26, made his initial appearance by video link in Springvale District Court to face charges relating to the Nov. 23 death of his mother, Kimberly Jones, 49.

Jones’ mother followed him and his girlfriend, Krista Randall, as they left the family home at 6 Brackett St. in Biddeford around 5:15 p.m. Kimberly Jones stood at the passenger window of her son’s truck while the couple sat inside, Randall in the passenger seat and Jones behind the wheel, according to a newly unsealed police affidavit.

Jones’ sister, Shawna, who also lives at the house, told police she heard a “thud” and saw her mother lying face down in the driveway after her brother sped away in the truck toward Graham Street, Biddeford police Patrolman Scott LaBrecque said in the affidavit filed at York County Superior Court in Alfred.

“(Shawna Jones) said that the passenger door was open and Krista (Randall) was sitting in the passenger seat. Kimberly Jones was standing behind the open door when the truck began moving backward, knocking Kimberly to the ground,” LaBrecque wrote in the affidavit.

LaBrecque also described interviews with other witnesses who were in the area when the incident occurred. It’s not clear from the report whether police think Jones struck his mother intentionally or by accident.

Police filed the six-page affidavit with the court on Nov. 24 seeking a warrant for Jones’ arrest. Jones’ whereabouts were unaccounted for until he was taken into custody in Sanford on Friday afternoon.

Superior Court Justice John O’Neil set bail at $50,000 when he issued the warrant, days before Jones was actually arrested.

In Springvale District Court on Monday, Judge Wayne Douglas left Jones’ bail amount unchanged by an agreement reached by Assistant District Attorney Linda Donovan and defense attorney Scott Houde, who represented Jones only for his initial court appearance.

Jones was not required to enter a plea to felony charges of leaving the scene of a fatal crash and reckless conduct with a motor vehicle.

Another attorney, Robert Ruffner, is expected to be appointed at a later date to represent Jones.

Jones, who is being held at the York County Jail in Alfred, appeared by video on a television screen in the courtroom. He said nothing audible at the brief hearing, though he appeared to speak at one point to Houde, who sat beside him at the jail.

Jones has a lengthy adult criminal record dating to 2006 that includes charges of burglary, theft, breaking into cars, receiving stolen property, escape from a correctional facility, eluding police, trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, forgery and domestic violence terrorizing, according to a Maine Department of Public Safety database.

He was involved in two previous car crashes, both of them blamed on his following too closely, police said.

In 2007, Kimberly Jones was charged as his accomplice in a string of car break-ins in the Biddeford area after she was caught driving a getaway vehicle with several stolen items inside, police said.

In that case, Shane Jones managed to briefly escape from the York County Jail by pretending to be a different inmate who was due for release, according to a Portland Press Herald story.

Kimberly Jones had criminal convictions on her record for thefts, according to the state database.
