A Democratic state representative from Rockland announced Sunday she is resigning from the Maine Legislature to take a job in Colorado.

Rep. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dickerson, a two-term legislator who represents Owls Head and Rockland, issued a statement Sunday saying she will resign later this week.

“After much thought and deliberation I am announcing that I will resign the office of state representative for District 93 this coming week. I am moving out of state for professional and personal opportunities that have developed since the election, but it is with a heavy heart that I leave Knox County and the midcoast region,” Dickerson wrote.

Democrats hold the majority in the House, with 79 seats compared to 68 Republican seats.

Dickerson, a former Rockland city councilor, was elected to a second House term in November over her Republican challenger, James Kalloch of Rockland.

Dickerson wrote on her website, www.elizabethdickerson.com, that she has moved to Colorado, where she is working at Parelli Natural Horsemanship. She said she resigned her job as a computer science teacher at Oceanside High School East in Rockland.

House Majority Leader Jeff McCabe, D-Skowhegan, released a statement Sunday on Dickerson’s resignation.

“We thank Representative Dickerson for her service and her hard work on behalf of the citizens of her district and the state of Maine. We wish her the best of luck in her endeavors,” McCabe wrote.

A special election will be held to fill the vacancy. Information about the election is not available yet.
