A Michigan-based company is targeting Maine businesses with solicitations intended to mislead them into thinking they must pay for the company’s services to comply with state law.

The company, which has used dozens of names including Maine Council for Corporations, has been fined over the past four years for deceptive practices in multiple states including Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana, according to the Better Business Bureau.

It mails solicitations to businesses for services including the preparation of official-looking but unnecessary corporate documents for $125.

The Maine Secretary of State’s Office issued a warning Wednesday to businesses that may have received one of the company’s solicitations.

“Please be advised that the form provided by the Maine Council for Corporations is not a document prescribed or recognized by the Department of the Secretary of State,” it said. “This is not being sent on behalf of the Department of the Secretary of State, and the records described are not required to be filed with the Secretary of State.”

The state Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions posted an alert in 2014 about similar solicitations to Maine corporations from the same company, which at the time was operating under the name Corporate Records Service.
