LEWISTON — Olympic gold medalist and two-time Boston Marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson is among four people scheduled to receive honorary degrees at the Bates College commencement.

Manjul Bhargava, winner of the 2014 Fields Medal for mathematics and a professor at Princeton University, will deliver the commencement address on May 31.

In addition to Bhargava and Benoit Samuelson, pioneering ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Abelson and furniture master craftsman Thomas Moser are also scheduled to receive honorary degrees.

About 500 students are expected to get degrees at the Lewiston school’s 149th commencement.

Bates President Clayton Spencer says the four honorary degree recipients “approach their work with passion, creativity and extraordinary dedication,” the “values we seek to instill in our students.”
