The Benton Board of Selectmen will leave it to voters to take the initiative and see if people want an ordinance restricting fireworks.
Selectman Antoine Morin said he’s heard from residents about fireworks and told them that the best action is to petition to have an ordinance placed on the Town Meeting warrant. The board briefly discussed the fireworks issue Monday night but took no action or public comment.
Morin said the board has discussed the issue and held a special Town Meeting to let residents vote on a proposal to limit fireworks in Benton.
“I personally feel we haven’t dodged this issue,” Morin said.
Last August, Benton held a special Town Meeting to consider an ordinance limiting fireworks in the community after the state legalized the pyrotechnics in 2012.
Selectman Melissa Paterson said she received a complaint from a Neck Road resident about fireworks debris in her yard and agreed to pass it along to the board.
Later Monday night, the board agreed to sign a letter MSAD 49 officials plan to draft asking the state to take back its share of retirement for school employees. School officials have not yet drafted the request.
