A Newport man who was wanted by police for allegedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend and her young son on Sunday was arrested Monday night by Newport police, according to police Chief Leonard MacDaid.

Coty Kelso, 26, of 44 Willow Drive, Newport, allegedly struck the woman in the chest with his fist about 2 p.m. Sunday. He also allegedly threw her son against a wall. Neither victim went to the hospital.

Kelso left on foot before police arrived, but he reportedly returned about 10 p.m. Sunday and attempted to kick in the front door to the mobile home before leaving again, MacDaid said.

An intake worker at the Penobscot County jail in Bangor said Kelso was arrested at 5:05 p.m. Monday in Newport. He is charged with domestic violence assault and simple assault. Kelso remained at the jail Tuesday afternoon, unable to post $260 as bail.
