A search was conducted Sunday for a missing Maine Maritime Academy junior from Westbrook who was last seen Friday night in Orono, but there was no word of success by Sunday night.

Orono police said the Maine Warden Service coordinated the search using an airplane, volunteers and tracking dogs in the area where David Breunig, 21, disappeared Friday night into Saturday morning. The Down East Emergency Medical Institute also helped search the area.

Breunig was last seen on North Main Avenue in Orono after leaving a gathering of friends on Crosby Street about 11:30 p.m. Friday on his way to meet up with other friends in downtown Orono, said Orono Police Chief Josh Ewing.

Breunig’s friends said he appeared to be fully functional and capable of caring for himself when he left Crosby Street, Ewing said.

Breunig is described as 6-foot-4 and about 225 pounds.

Ewing said there has been no contact with Breunig’s cellphone.

Search efforts concentrated on the woods and area near where Breunig was last seen, Ewing said.

Breunig’s father, also named David, said Sunday that David and his brother, Derek, 19, a freshman at Maine Maritime Academy, often socialized in Orono.

Both of his sons are graduates of Westbrook High School.

“I haven’t heard anything now,” his father said at 9 p.m. Sunday. “He should have been back at Maine Maritime by now. So I know the outlook is not good.”

Maine Maritime Academy President William Brennan asked members of the school community to share any information they may have to help law enforcement agencies with their search.

“We hold hope for David’s safety. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” Brennan said in a statement posted on the school’s Facebook account.
