A Massachusetts man was killed late Saturday night in a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash in the Franklin County town of Weld.
State troopers were called to the scene at about 11:30 p.m. on School Street in Weld, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release.
The investigation of the crash indicated that a 2006 Honda Civic was being driven north on Route 156 in Weld when the driver, Richard Rogers, 58, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, lost control of the car and went onto the dirt shoulder of the roadway and then went into a spin.
The Honda crossed the center line and struck a large tree, McCausland said. Rogers died at the scene, he said.
The Honda had massive damage to the rear of the vehicle. Excessive speed and the possible presence of deer in or near the roadway are the likely cause of the crash, according to McCausland.
Trooper Reid Bond of State Police Troop C Barracks in Skowhegan is the primary investigator in the crash. He was assisted at the crash site by Cpl. Kevin Hartley of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Weld and Wilton fire departments also responded to the scene, McCausland said.
