MADISON — The cause of a fire that destroyed an outbuilding Monday morning at a residential property in Madison is under investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal.
One of the property’s owners reported the fire at 232 Bagley Road. at about 7:30 a.m., according to Chief Don French of the Madison Fire Department.
French said one of the homeowners had put the family’s children on the school bus at about 7 a.m. and noticed nothing coming from the outbuilding. Shortly afterward, however, the same person brought a box to the porch and noticed the outbuilding was engulfed in flames, according to French.
Although firefighters arrived within five minutes after learning of the fire, the building was “totally gone,” French said.
French described the structure as a 20-by-20-foot shed that was vacant when destroyed by flames. The building had electricity to it and was not insured, according to French.
The outbuilding stood about 30 feet from the family’s house, which was not damaged by the fire. A nearby chicken coop was also saved.
French said the flames were out within 15 minutes and crews left by 8:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire was unknown Monday.
Firefighters from Anson, Athens and Solon also responded to the fire. No injuries were reported.
