SKOWHEGAN — A Smithfield man has been indicted on charges stemming from a reported domestic violence incident involving a machete that led to an eight-hour standoff with police.
Sy A. Perri, 33, was indicted last month by a Somerset County grand jury on charges of aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.
Perri is accused of assaulting a person and threatening the person with a machete, according to the indictment.
After receiving a report Aug. 9 of an alleged assault at a residence near Quaker Lane in Smithfield, police found Perri had barricaded himself inside the home and was refusing to leave, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives obtained search and arrest warrants, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said at the time. A Maine State Police tactical unit then executed the warrants and Perri was arrested without incident about eight hours after police responded.
Perri remains at the Somerset County Jail in Madison, according to online jail booking records.
Aggravated assault is a Class B offense, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines, according to state statutes.
Criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon is a Class C offense, punishable by up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move forward to trial.
