BANGOR — Dirigo Reads, a program that aims to put a book in the hands of every Maine first grader each month during the school year, partnered with Governor’s Restaurants and Bakery for Read a New Book Month earlier this month.
At a Dec. 14 event at all Governor’s Restaurants, Dirigo Reads estimates it distributed more than 1,000 books to Maine children for free. Governor’s also donated a portion of breakfast sales to the Maine non-profit that morning, culminating in a $2,500 donation for Dirigo Reads to further its mission to improve childhood literacy.
Governor’s Restaurants are located in Old Town, Bangor, Ellsworth, Waterville, Lewiston and Presque Isle.
Schools and businesses interested in being a part of the program can visit DirigoReads.org.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
