A storm making its way up the East Coast could bring some much-needed rain to Maine by the end of the weekend.
The long weekend will kick off with a stretch of nice weather, but a coastal low headed for the Gulf of Maine could bring rain and gusty winds starting Sunday.
“There’s still a lot of uncertainty with the track of the coastal low,” said Jon Palmer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray. “It’s not really anything too concerning at this point.”
It is still uncertain where the storm will track, Palmer said. The most recent models don’t show the low fully moving into the Gulf of Maine, which could impact how much precipitation the region will get.
Palmer said it looks like southern Maine could get 0.75-2 inches of rain from Sunday to Tuesday morning.
“We’re pretty confident there will be a good amount of rain at least across the southern half of New Hampshire and into the Portland area,” he said. “Along the coast, we could see at least a good half-inch of rain through those two days.”
Drought conditions in Maine worsened during the first week of October, driven by record warmth and widespread precipitation shortfalls, according to an update from the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday.
Extreme drought spread north and now covers 30% of Maine and 53% of New Hampshire, according to the National Weather Service. All of Maine is now in moderate drought or worse.
“We need every drop of rain we can get,” Palmer said.
There could be some marine impacts from the weather system. Wind gusts of 25-35 mph out of the northeast — and possibly some gale force gusts — on Monday could be hazardous for smaller boats, Palmer said.
“Along the coast and inland, winds could be breezy to gusty,” he said.
Temperatures will continue to cool, with typical seasonal lows at night of the lower 30s to 40s, the weather service said. After a warmer Saturday, highs on Sunday will be close to seasonal averages in the upper 50s to mid 60s.
As the coastal low passes by Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will be cooler, but could be followed by a brief warmup on Wednesday.
