AUGUSTA — Michael Michaud won the two-way race to represent Ward 3 on the Augusta City Council.

Michaud’s 649 votes were enough to hold off challenger Amanda Heath, a newcomer to city politics, who received 477 votes.

Michaud, 64, a sales manager at Gagne Concrete, has been on the City Council for two terms over six years, and previously served one year on the Augusta Board of Education.

Heath, 47, a hairstylist, has not previously held political office. She has served in the Job Corps and U. S. Navy.

Michaud said during the election some good things have started since he joined the council, and he wants to see them through, including efforts of a committee he chairs that is looking to make improvements within the Sand Hill neighborhood in the ward.

Michaud said he and his wife have been very involved in the community, including starting a backpack program to provide school supplies to local students, and working to find ways to help their fellow residents.

Heath said during the campaign that Ward 3 could benefit from fresh representation, and she wanted to make sure that as Augusta makes plans for growth and expansion, resident voices are at the forefront of decision making.
