Colby College’s arts program won the 2026 Maine Art Education Association’s Art Advocate of the Year award, the school announced Wednesday.
Matt Johnson, president of the association, said in a letter that the honor was awarded to the Waterville college’s arts office for its “belief in the arts as a powerful force for building vibrant,
thriving communities.”
Johnson said the college’s K-12 arts programs — including free field trips, shared studio space and professional development for local teachers — particularly stood out.
“What truly distinguishes your work, however, is your sustained dedication to the arts through the revitalization of downtown Waterville and the creation of spaces where communities can gather, connect, and grow through artistic expression,” Johnson wrote. “Your willingness to collaborate, innovate, and champion local schools is both inspiring and deeply meaningful.”
The arts association will present the award Saturday at the Youth Art Month Celebration at the Portland Museum of Art.
