Rhonda Marquis of Mount Vernon plans to present a program about winter sowing and how to save money and feed that desire to garden in the winter.
The program, sponsored by the Dr. Shaw Memorial Library, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Mount Vernon Community Center, 2 North Road.
Winter sowing is sowing seeds in clear plastic containers, one gallon milk jugs, juice jugs or any clear container that acts as a mini greenhouse outside in the middle of winter. It is an easy, inexpensive way to start seedlings without the worry and hassle of hardening them off, according to a news release from Alice Olson at the library.
Mother nature tells the seedlings when it’s safe to sprout as the seeds become accumulated to the fluctuating temperatures. It’s a great way to jump start the growing season for those who don’t have means to start them inside, the news release notes.
Materials will be provided, but it would be helpful that participants bring a gallon milk jug and seeds to share.
