WATERVILLE — A Waterville man has been charged with aggravated driving to endanger after police said the Jeep he was driving Sunday on Elm Street in Waterville struck two people trying to cross the street.

Peter Michaud, 70, of Waterville, was charged with aggravated driving to endanger after the Jeep he was driving Sunday on Elm Street in Waterville struck and seriously injured a woman and left another person with minor injuries, police said.

One of the pedestrians, Sarah Pickell, 44, of Sidney, suffered serious injuries and remains in the intensive care unit at Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to her family. Pickell’s son, Anthony, 17, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Sarah Pickell is a receptionist at Waterville Senior High School.

Police earlier this week would not release many details after the incident, including the identities of the victims, while the crash was being investigated. The Pickell family, however, confirmed their involvement in the accident and said they had just left First Church of Waterville at the time.

Maj. Jason Longley of the Waterville Police Department said Thursday that Michaud was summoned and charged Sunday, the day of the incident, a detail not released earlier this week. Aggravated driving to endanger is a Class C crime, he said. Class C crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Michaud was operating a Jeep Patriot south on Elm Street, near Park Street, at 10:38 a.m. Sunday, when the pair was trying to cross Elm Street from the church, located at the corner of Elm and Park streets, according to police. It formerly was called First Baptist Church.

Earlier this week, Longley said the Jeep tried to go around a vehicle stopped in traffic and struck the two pedestrians as they were crossing in the crosswalk. On Thursday, he confirmed that police believe “they were just starting to enter the crosswalk on the edge of the roadway and sidewalk at the time of the incident.”

The crash report indicates the Jeep jumped the curb and went up onto the sidewalk, and when it struck the Pickells they were thrown forward several feet. It also states the Jeep “ran over the top of” Sarah Pickell.

Sarah Pickell was taken by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center after the crash.

Michaud was not injured, according to Longley.

Contacted at the hospital Thursday, Pickell’s family released the following statement: “Sarah is stable and we appreciate all of the support.”

“We are all deeply saddened by what has happened to Sarah and her family,” Peter Hallen, Waterville Schools superintendent, said Thursday. “Sarah is the first person that the staff, students, and families of Waterville Senior High School see each day, and she models an unwavering kindness and work ethic we should all aspire to. We wish the best to Sarah for a full, speedy recovery.”
