The Portland Hearts of Pine have one regular-season game left in their first season in USL League One, a third-tier men’s professional soccer league. But their season won’t end after their 5 p.m. game Saturday against AF Alta FC at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
The playoff picture is still unsettled for Portland, but here’s a quick primer.
Question: Will the Hearts of Pine have a playoff game?
Answer: Yes. They clinched one of the eight playoff spots on Oct. 18 when they tied Westchester SC, 2-2.
Q: Where will the Hearts finish in the 14-team league standings?
A: Anywhere from fourth to seventh. The Hearts (11 wins, 7 losses, 11 ties) are in sixth place with 44 points. Wins are worth three points, and a tie is one point. Each team in the league has one game remaining on Saturday.
Q: The top four teams will host a quarterfinal game. What has to happen for Portland to move up to fourth?
A: The Hearts must beat AV Alta FC, and they need fourth-place Union Omaha (13-10-6, 45 points) and fifth-place FC Naples (12-9-8, 44 points) to either lose or tie their final game. If Omaha and Portland both win, Omaha will be ahead in points (48 to 47). If FC Naples and Portland both win and finish with 47 points, Naples has the first tiebreaker, which is most league wins.
Q: Portland can slide to seventh? How would that happen?
A: If Portland loses or ties against AV Alta (which must win to have a chance at making the playoff) and the South Georgia Tormenta (12-11-6, 42 points) beats Texoma FC, then South Georgia will move to sixth and Portland will finish seventh.
Q: Which team will Portland play in the quarterfinals?
A: Lots of scenarios for this question.
• If Portland is fourth it will host Omaha, Naples or Tormenta, which could all end up fifth.
• If Portland improves to fifth, that means Portland won its game but so did either Omaha or Naples, but not both. Portland would play at the team that won its final game.
• If Portland stays in sixth, it will be at the No. 3 seed. Right now, that would be the Spokane Velocity, the team Portland beat 6-1 on Tuesday.
• If Portland slips to seventh because it lost and South Georgia won, it will be at the No. 2 seed. That could be any of the current top-three teams: One Knoxville, the Chattanooga Red Wolves or Spokane.
