UNITY — “They Came From Away,” a one-man play written and performed by Trevor McKinven, will be staged for one night at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St., according to a news release from the center.

On tour from Montreal, McKinven said he selected Unity College Center for the Performing Arts specifically for its characteristics as a small, rural venue.

The main character, a Newfoundlander named Johnny “Fever” McDermott, introduces three “come–from-awayers” who were among 6,500 plane passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, during the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The characters include an Italian, a Southern Belle named Sherry, and a New York firefighter from the Bronx, each of them in a bit of shock regarding the events, the geography, and the culture of Newfoundland.

McKinven’s performance is comedic and poignant, as he switches from Newfoundlander to strong-accented Italian to Southern Belle, exhibiting how the human race can pull together to comfort and support — and feed Jell-O and lasagna — to those stranded and in need.

The show is set for 7 p.m. Friday, July 10; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10.
