Natural gas story raises questions
The Aug. 11 story by Michael Shepherd about natural gas availability for homes and business in Augusta and other areas ("Central Maine natural gas options confront consumers") is the best-written description of this topic that I have seen. However, I have two questions.

Summit Natural Gas right for the community
As a longtime Augusta resident, I'm excited that our community will soon have access to natural gas. This means many families, homeowners and businesses will be able to reduce their energy costs and provide an economic boost for our local economy. Recently, the city decided to select Summit Natural Gas of Maine to provide natural gas for city buildings and local schools, a decision that will lead to an annual savings of more than $600,000.

Apathy of Americans has led to corruption
It is really sad that the Constitution of this country is no longer relevant to the politicians in our government. The reasoning behind the Constitution is all spelled out in the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers, but those are also irrelevant.

Pastor’s letter doesn’t sound like Jesus’ teachings
I have read many criticisms of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in the Readers' Opinions, but never one so distorted and misguided as the one written by the Rev. Jeremy Hiltz in the Aug. 3 newspaper ("Obamacare exemplifies the way of Satan").

Calling it ‘Obamacare’ makes letter political
By calling the Affordable Care Act, "Obamacare" Jeremy Hiltz (letter, "Obamacare exemplifies the way of Satan," Aug. 3) is making a political statement and not a religious one. The prototype for this act was written by Republicans in Massachusetts.

Misconceptions give Maine’s bats a bad rap
A family friend posted on Facebook one morning that after waking up to a strange noise in her apartment, she discovered a bat flying about. Horrified, she hunkered down on a stairwell under a blanket until the creature flew out an open window. In her words, she was "completely traumatized."
