Driving with handicap card gets you a ticket

Just a word of caution, people who drive around with their blue handicap cards hanging from their rearview mirror can be pulled over and given a ticket for obstruction of view. I have read this in the court section of the paper, people are paying fines.

Arming ‘good guys’ won’t keep away ‘bad guys’

We are mothers who strive to ensure that our kids can grow up in a safe, loving environment. We are also family practitioners in a small practice in Readfield who work hard to improve the health of our community.

We need fewer radar guns, more patrolmen

As sad and demonic as are the shootings in Newtown, Conn. and other schools, malls, businesses, etc. around our nation, it is not the fault of the weapons used, but the demoralization of our society and the failures of the governmental, judicial, law enforcement and education systems.

Town offices should offer equal not special rights

I could say shame on Maine for allowing gay marriage, but I have to say shame on some Maine towns taking advantage of the gay marriage vote. These towns are opening their doors to city hall on a Saturday to allow citizens to get a marriage license on the first day gay marriage becomes legal.

Thanks, AARP for food collection effort

I am writing this letter to thank the members of AARP's six chapters here in Maine. Maine is number one in all of New England when it comes to food insecurity. Especially during the winter months many in our state grapple with keeping food on the table. AARP's six chapters made an extraordinary effort to help by hosting local food drives that support food pantries and other programs such as Meals on Wheels.

Banning guns easy; helping others not so much

I am going to suggest something horrible, so please bear with me.

Two solutions that save Congress money and lives

I think I can fix two problems at once by saving money and lives. Everyone now speaks of, "if we can save just one life" then we should pass new laws. Well, someone needs to explain to me why we are still making vehicles that go to 160 mph. Last time I checked the limit was 65 below Bangor, and only slightly higher north. Think of all the lives that would be saved, to say nothing of fuel consumption. This reduces oil dependence and lowers emissions. Maybe Angus King will submit that as law.
