    Manslaughter charges for no-insurance deaths?

About 11,000 people in the country die needlessly and prematurely each year simply because they do not have health insurance and, therefore, do not get medical care when they need it, according to a 2009 study by the American Journal of Public Health.

    Consolidating jails saves counties millions

It comes as no surprise that the newspaper would endorse the idea that the "State jail system needs the counties to work properly" (Our Opinion, July 29).

Charter schools are open to all students

Did the editor (Our Opinion: “Charter school plan for Hinckley gets good grade,” July 22) read Maine’s charter school law? Charter schools are public, open to all students. It’s Olympic season again, and a lot of us are excited to watch our hard-working and gifted athletes compete for medals. All of the competitors are outstanding, and not one of them is a loser. NBC paid $1 billion for the rights to broadcast these events. To pay for these rights, it must sell air […]

Entrepreneur invests his own money, sweat

I guess, according to Barack Obama’s reasoning, the panhandler I see on my streets got there because of our road systems and an inferior teacher. I think the difference between the panhandler and the successful entrepreneur is that one took advantage of the American dream and with his own investment of money and sweat built […]

Politicians made Mainers dependent on the system

I had to chuckle after reading Buddy Doyle’s letter of July 22 (“Maine not open for business but embarrassment”. Maine is no different now than it was 50 years ago except for one thing: it has debt through unfunded liabilities. That’s like a Christmas present the people of Maine will forever be responsible for. The […]
