10 days in jail not enough for torture of bobcat

I am writing in regard to the men who called themselves Maine Guides, former or current, it doesn’t matter. I have another word for them: evil (article, July 4). To get only 10 days in jail for the torture and death of a bobcat is an absolute injustice. The terror and pain that poor animal […]

People of Waterville should vote on police station site

I have an observation and a suggestion about the controversial new police station location. I not only read the comments made at the meeting on Monday, but also heard from attendees. I wish I could have been there. I agree we need a new police station; no question about that. When I was a young […]

Old Marden’s store site would be good for police

Building a police station in the location proposed, at the Head of the Falls, near the Morning Sentinel building, would be detrimental for the future of downtown Waterville. One thing city dwellers everywhere agree on is the value of open space, especially when planted with trees, shrubs, grass or flowers. Common, open space is essential. […]

Pleased Crockett seeks return to Legislature

We are pleased to read that former lawmaker Patsy Crockett will seek the nomination to run for state House of Representatives District 57. She always took the time to talk with us about any issues and committee meetings that pertained to our cause when she previously served in the House of Representatives. Crockett is a […]

Winthrop’s two budgets combine for tax increase

We were deeply disappointed to read in the July 11 Kennebec Journal that Winthrop voted down the 2012-13 school budget. We reviewed the budget in detail before attending the last school board meeting in June. School administrators and school board members were facing a $650,000 gap between the current and proposed budgets and, through a […]

It’s wrong to steal from someone’s grave

I wonder why people feel they have the need to steal from graves. My granddaughter passed in 2010 and is laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Augusta. Someone has taken the stuff we put there. This is very upsetting. Why? This is wrong. Pat Salmonson Vassalboro

Would LePage kick old poor people out of homes?

I seek clarification of a point raised in your story of July 11, “Pingree: Block LePage plan to cut 27,000 from Medicaid rolls.” My understanding of the article is that Gov. Paul LePage wants to eliminate those persons who receive both Medicare and Medicaid. A person is eligible for Medicare by virtue of either age […]

‘Enlightening’ a word that can describe Inca culture

I generally try not to respond to “Reader’s Opinions.” All opinions are of value, even those I disagree with. In this case, I must write to agree with Cidalia Thibault’s July 10 letter regarding the overuse of the words “amazing” and “awesome.” Such words indeed belittle her experience in the study of a culture other […]

What will be governor’s next moronic statement?

In his column, Mike Tipping said the statement about the Gestapo was not the worst that Paul LePage has made. If you are a Holocaust survivor, a World War II prisoner of war under the Gestapo, or one of the people tortured by them, you probably disagree with Tipping. Now we can sit back wait […]

Devine’s column makes mockery of church

I frowned after reading J.P. Devine’s column “Summer Pepsi nights” on July 8. In it he recounted the nostalgic summer days of his youth when he and his friends would steal a couple sodas from a beverage truck: “We could have taken a whole wooden case, but we weren’t thieves, and we always confessed it […]
