July 4th means more than fireworks, parades

I want to express my appreciation to the people who put together the fireworks in Winslow. What a good job! Thing is, fireworks are not all what the July 4th is all about. It’s about freedom and all who have paid the price for our independence and the freedom we can enjoy every day. Parades, […]

Disappointed in Flood’s lack of environmental support

As a voter who supported Rep. Pat Flood in the past election, I want to both thank him and hold him accountable for his poor environmental voting record. I supported him because he convinced me he would support Maine’s environmental safeguards. As House Appropriations Committee Chairman, Flood deserves credit for his work on the budget. […]

Photo session is over; here are some tasks in Winthrop

I was pleased to see the photo (July 14) of our new town manager, Jeff Woolston, and Police Chief Joe Young as members of the Rotary Club. We are indeed fortunate to have men of this caliber serving our town. Now that the photo session is over, however, perhaps Chief Young will get serious about […]

Dechaine’s jury didn’t have all the evidence

Generally, I don’t follow many criminal cases in the news. I believe that a jury of peers will examine the evidence presented and come up with a verdict as designed by our Constitution and penal code. In the Casey Anthony trial, however, I did develop an interest because of “grocery line chatter. “ It seems […]

Fish & Wildlife acted to protect Maine’s wildlife

In April, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife submitted "agency review comments" regarding the grid-scale industrial wind facility proposed by Highland Wind LLC for the mountains in Highland Plantation. That report was a major factor in withdrawal of Highland Wind's permit application for the project. Angus King, however, made it clear that his corporation intends to resubmit that application.

War, tax cuts a fiscallyinane paradigm for U.S.

As an American and combat veteran, I am bitterly opposed to only 1 percent of our citizens defending our country.

War, tax cuts a fiscally inane paradigm for U.S.

As an American and combat veteran, I am bitterly opposed to only 1 percent of our citizens defending our country. If most Americans feel that the wars we are engaged in are necessary for the protection of our country then the draft should be re-implemented and taxes should be raised considerably. George W. Bush was […]

Government needs to understand budget cuts

Shouldn’t the government keep from spending so much that it endangers national sovereignty and security, or at least something akin to it? It would be an understatement to say this is rather important. Yet, the question is unnecessarily raised repeatedly. Why can’t government grasp the concept of budget cuts? I’m not talking about spending less, […]

Stench of coverup in Dennis Dechaine case

Webster’s dictionary defines hubris as “wanton insolence or arrogance resulting from excessive pride,” and defines complicity as “partnership in wrongdoing.” The Dennis Dechaine case illustrates how the Maine Attorney General’s Office has demonstrated both for more than two decades. That office has seriously compromised its mission of “justice for all” and rendered its actions suspect, […]

What is wrong with working for a living?

We finally have a true people’s governor. It has always been easy to promise change for the working people, but the doing has always been the problem. The entrenched liberals have given away the farm for years (it ensured another vote for them later). Why not give the rich people’s money away, so what if […]
