Rodney Whittemore, R-Skow-hegan, who works on the Legislature's Insurance and Financial Services Committee, describes the results of Maine's new health insurance law (Public Law 90) as "remarkable," "encouraging," "affordable" and "a testament to the power of the free market."

Maine police chief got one-sided view of Israel
On Feb. 10, the newspaper carried an article about the visit of Col. Robert Williams, chief of the Maine State Police, to Israel to learn about anti-terrorist techniques. The article was interesting for what it said and what it did not.

Gun registration would do nothing to reduce crime
Jim Chiddix in his Feb. 15 letter, "Gun ownership should not be unregulated," seems to be under the erroneous opinion that registering firearms and their owners would reduce crime.

Closing Pre-release Center short-sighted
I am concerned about the relative silence around the proposed closing of the Hallowell Pre-release Center. This facility has provided unquestionable service to the community through the years, and its closing would be a tremendous blow to the area.

Public knowledge of who has guns is unnecessary
I just read the newspaper's opinion about gun permits and the need to keep them secret (editorial, "Concealed-gun permits should not be secret," Feb. 20).
