The $33 million center will consolidate cancer care at Central Maine Medical Center.
Hospital officials say the employees were infected by an ICU patient who had come from the Marshwood Center, a long-term care facility with an outbreak this week.
Outbreaks at a meat plant, a rehab facility and a homeless shelter may account for the increases, as it's too early to see any effects of loosened restrictions.
The proposed center, to be built by a developer and leased over 20 years, is slated to cost about $35 million. With interest and leasing costs, it is expected to cost the Lewiston-based health system about $38 million in all.
