PORTLAND — Former legislator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Elizabeth “Libby” Mitchell is being honored by the University of Maine School of Law.

The school’s Women’s Law Association selected Mitchell as the recipient of its annual Outstanding Alumna Award.

Mitchell, a 2005 graduate from the school, was honored at a reception Friday night. Previous recipients include Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Leigh Saufley and former U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby.

Mitchell, who lives in Vassalboro, was the first woman in the country to be elected at the state level as both speaker of the House and Senate president.

She served in the Legislature between 1974 and 2010 and was Democratic candidate for Maine governor in 2010.
