Auxiliary recognizeshealth career students

FARMINGTON — The Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee recently announced the six recipients of the West Central Maine Health Careers Scholarship Program. The scholarships are presented to students residing in the Franklin Memorial Hospital service area who are pursuing careers in the health care field.

Waterville’s Annual Appeal Awards Dinner tonight

WATERVILLE — The Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center will kick off its Annual Appeal with the Annual Appeal Awards Dinner, according to an Alfond Youth Center press release. The evening begins at 5 tonight with cocktail hour followed by a 6 p.m. opening musical performance and then dinner and awards. Performing during the show, for the first time, will be the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA choir. The opening act will feature performances by the AYC’s Young American Dance Center and the After School Program. Special guest and keynote speaker Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

Sylvain namedto spring dean’s list

Jacob M. Sylvain, of Norridgewock, has been named to dean’s list for the spring semester at Pennsylvania State University. Sylvain is majoring in petroleum and natural gas engineering and is a 2010 graduate of Skowhegan Area High School.

Students raise funds for cancer patients

STRONG — Strong Elementary School’s eighth-grade class will visit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program during its class trip set for June 10-12, according to a press release. Students will donate copies of local author Karen Calloway’s book, “After The Rain.”

Laflin receives awardfor voluneerism

AUGUSTA — Lisa Park Laflin, of New Vineyard, recently received the Excellence in Volunteer Administration Award during the annual presentation of the Governor’s Awards for Service and Volunteerism. Junk-food debate unveils dumbed-down electorate

I’m solidly on board with the bill sponsored by Sen. Roger Katz restricting certain junk foods from purchase using food stamps. A Portland recipient objects, lamenting parents not being allowed to buy their children a candy bar or lollipop “now and then.” The problem is now and then — throughout the day.
