EAST VASSALBORO — The Vassalboro Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m., Aug. 29, at the museum, 327 Main St. Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Maine State Historian, will be the speaker. The program will be “Franklin Simmons, Civil War Sculptor.”Simmons was a 19th century sculptor born in Webster in 1839. He spent most of his early years in Bath and Lewiston. He started painting and sculpting during his childhood.
Civil War people he sculpted include William Seward, members of Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet as well as busts of President Lincoln and General William T. Sherman.
