A trio of alleged purse thieves, including two sought after Augusta police stopped and surrounded a taxi with guns drawn last month, were indicted on several charges in Kennebec County Superior Court on Friday.

Police have said William K. Seabron, 23, of Augusta, Audra L. Purington, 37, of Belgrade, and Beth A. McEwen, 28, of Augusta, stole purses and wallets and went shopping with credit and debit cards inside, making charges at Walmart, TJ Maxx and Wendy’s in Augusta in late June and early July.

On Friday, Seabron was indicted on charges of robbery, misuse of identification, theft by unauthorized taking and two counts of trafficking of scheduled drugs — marijuana and buprenorphine.

Purington is charged with robbery, misuse of identification and two counts each of theft by unauthorized taking and violation of condition of release. McEwen drew charges of theft by unauthorized taking, misuse of identification and two counts of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs — heroin and cocaine.

McEwen was arrested July 1, telling police the three targeted “older ladies,” according to an affidavit filed in Augusta District Court by Det. Chris Blodgett. Seabron was arrested on July 16 after police, with guns drawn, surrounded the taxi he was riding in on Western Avenue. Police sought Purington afterward and arrested her a week later.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
