NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A schooner that has been a fixture of the New Haven waterfront for more than two decades is being sold to a cruise company in Bar Harbor, Maine.
The 91-foot Quinnipiack currently belongs to the financially troubled Schooner Inc. organization, which used it as an educational vessel but had its lease of classroom with a local school district terminated in September.
The New Haven Register reports the vessel is being sold to Downeast Windjammer Cruises owner Steve Pagels, who plans to bring it to Maine this spring.
The Quinnipiack was built in Maine in 1984. It originally belonged to Pagels before it was sold to the Connecticut nonprofit in 1990.
“We’re excited,” Pagels said. “She’ll be coming back home to Maine.”
Pagels originally had named the 19th-century style vessel the Janet May, in honor of his wife.
“Schooner has done a good job with the boat over the years,” Pagels said. “I know they’ve had a bumpy road.”
New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said the schooner’s departure will be a loss for the city’s heritage.
“I join all those who will miss seeing her sleek lines and full red sails from our city’s waterfront,” Harp said.
