Winthrop Street in Hallowell will be closed to traffic starting at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24 for a large culvert replacement, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

The street will be closed from Water Street in the downtown to Whitten Road. The work is expected to take nearly all week, with Winthrop Street expected to reopen to traffic on Friday, Aug. 28.

Drivers are asked to follow a 10 mile detour from Whitten Road to Western Avenue, State Street, Water Street and on to Winthrop Street.
