The search is on for Portland’s next Christmas tree.
Portland’s arborist, Jeff Tarling, put out the word in a news release Thursday.
“Wanted: a 45-foot to 60-foot well-rounded tree to be decorated with thousands of LED lights and installed at Monument Square in downtown Portland for the holiday season,” the announcement said.
The city’s annual holiday trees are donated free of charge, although the donors get free removal of a tree they no longer want and the joy of seeing their trees in lights on the big stage.
“Each year we look for a stately and well-rounded tree within 10 miles of Portland that a resident needs to have taken down,” Tarling said in the news release.
Portland plans to set up this year’s tree on Nov. 19, so Tarling has six weeks to choose the “winner.”
The city hopes to find the tree in Portland or the surrounding communities of South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Westbrook, Gorham, Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth.
Submissions should be sent to info@portlandmaine.com with a picture of the tree and the address and phone number for the owner. You can also mail a picture and contact information to Portland Downtown, 549 Congress St., Portland, Maine 04101.
The tree lighting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27.
