TURNER — Carol Ivers, 79, of Fayette was killed and Jacob Diaz, 24, of Augusta and Alana Hartford, 23, of Leeds injured in a two-vehicle crash in Turner at about 9:50 a.m. Sunday, according to officials.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies and Turner Fire and Rescue responded to the state Route 4 and Upper Street area and found Ivers in her blue 2016 Hyundai Sonata. Diaz and Hartford were ejected from a green 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. Both were transported to the hospital. The survivors’ conditions were not known Monday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Office’s preliminary investigation showed that Ivers was making a left turn from Upper Street onto Route 4 when Diaz, traveling north, passed a tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction. Diaz collided with Ivers, who was getting into the southbound lane.
Officials learned a second truck, an army-green Dodge pickup, may have been racing Diaz from Center Street in Auburn, according to a statement released by the office. Investigators are attempting to identify the driver of the second truck. They ask anyone who may have witnessed trucks racing around that time to contact Sgt. Brian Smith or Deputy James Phillips at the Sheriff’s Office at 207-753-2599.
