Most people have probably seen the very well-produced ad encouraging a “no” vote on Question 3,which is advocating for the creation of Pine Tree Power. It includes a grandfatherly “former island private power CEO,” and warns of massive financial burden, the “lack of a plan,” and even poorer service than currently experienced at the hands of Versant Power and Central Maine Power. It concludes by saying that Pine Tree Power is just a plain “bad idea.”

The ad is sponsored by Maine Energy Progress, and innocent-enough sounding name that implies it’s a group of concerned citizens. The address for the sponsor, provided in the TV ad, is 28 Penobscot Meadow Drive, Hampden ME 04444. That also happens to be the geographic address of Versant Power. So the seemingly apparent “group of concerned citizens” is, in fact, one of the two companies that Pine Tree Power hopes to replace.

In the meantime, Versant Power (and, presumably, CMP) are spending lots of money for slick TV and print ads to fight passage of the referendum. This is nothing but a bold attempt to dupe Maine’s voting public!
