PALMYRA — A 28-year-old Massachusetts man was found dead after an apparent shooting in Palmyra early Wednesday morning, police said.

Jaquan Humphries, of the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, was found dead after the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to 531 Madawaska Road, the Maine State Police said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

An autopsy at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined Humphries’ cause of death to be a gunshot wound and the manner of death to be a homicide, state police said.

Humphries was believed to have been living at the Madawaska Road residence.

No arrests were announced Thursday, but the state police said there is no known danger to the public.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central and evidence response technicians investigated throughout the day Wednesday.

Investigators at the home Wednesday, some of whom were wearing personal protective gear as they processed the scene, had declined to comment on what they were investigating. A state police spokesperson on Wednesday called it an “incident” and confirmed detectives were investigating.

Police did not point to any motive or possible suspect Thursday, though the home at 531 Madawaska Road is known to law enforcement for suspected illegal drug trafficking.

In August and September 2024, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office executed two search warrants at the home.

Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, declined to comment on any connection between Wednesday’s homicide and the search warrants executed previously.

The first of the two search warrants, executed on Aug. 29, resulted in the arrest of Kasiem D. Smith, now 30, of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Smith was indicted in December on four Class A counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and has pleaded not guilty, court records show. He is out of jail on bail while the case is pending.

Police seized approximately 900 grams of cocaine, a loaded 9 mm handgun with a filed-off serial number and $2,800 in suspected proceeds from the sale of drugs, according to an affidavit supporting Smith’s arrest written by Detective David Cole of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith’s indictment also alleges he was trafficking fentanyl in addition to cocaine.

Investigators located five other people at the residence during the August search, some of whom initially tried to flee. Humphries, the man found dead Wednesday, was not listed in the affidavit as among those at the property during that search.

The Sheriff’s Office returned to the residence Sept. 11 with a search warrant to locate Jennifer Hight, who was identified during the August search but had to be transported to a hospital for treatment of an injury, according to court records. Hight had outstanding warrants and was believed to be in violation of bail conditions, Cole wrote in an affidavit requesting the search warrant.

The search resulted in the arrest of Hight, now 47, of Palmyra, and Jamie Ramsdell, now 44, of Pittsfield, according to the Sheriff’s Office and court records.

Ramsdell told Detective Cole that he and Hight helped Smith sell drugs from the residence, Cole wrote in an affidavit.

Hight was indicted in December on two Class A counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and two Class E counts of violation of condition of release, court records show. She was transferred from the Somerset County Jail in Madison to a treatment facility in Augusta in December, while the case remains pending, according to court records.

Ramsdell was indicted in December on two Class A counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, court records show. He was being held as of Thursday at the Somerset County Jail, according to online jail records.

Their indictments also list fentanyl as the drug being trafficked, in addition to cocaine.

Court affidavits list the owner or occupant of the property as Thomas Rose Jr., 33. Palmyra tax records from September 2024 available online list the owners as Michelle M. Rose and Armand Cloutier.

On Wednesday, outside the home, which is near the Pittsfield town line, there were several items and trash bags strewn about the porch and yard.

Staff at the Palmyra town office said Thursday they had no records of complaints or code violations for the property.

The killing is the second in recent months on the same road, though it is unclear if they are related.

On Oct. 11, 2024, around 3 a.m., 48-year-old Todd Parsons was stabbed at 482 Madawaska Road — which GPS mapping shows is about a quarter of a mile from Wednesday’s shooting.

Parsons died from his injures a week later, after being treated at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, state police said.

State police said the day of the stabbing that their investigation included interviewing people and processing evidence. A section of Madawaska Road was closed for much of that day.

No arrests were made.

Moss, the state police spokesperson, said via email in late February that the investigation into that death remained “active and ongoing.” State police were continuing to withhold the official cause and manner of Parsons’ death, determined after an autopsy at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.
