Waterville Opera House reopens; city comes alive

The Waterville Opera House re-opened on April 27, and downtown Waterville came alive again. There was not a parking space to be found along the entire length of Main Street, and all the restaurants were filled prior to showtime. The opening production showcased the talented actors, actresses, dancers and musicians from central Maine. Maine International Film […]

Men who beat women are acting like cowards

It seems like every day that I pick up a newspaper, there’s at least one article about a man beating on a woman, or as the state calls it “domestic assault.” What’s so domestic about assault, anyway? It’s like asking what’s civil about war. I remember when a families business/problems were hidden behind closed doors. […]

Blodgett didn’t deserve treatment from UMaine

My concern is about the women’s basketball team at the University of Maine, Orono. Cindy Blodgett was head coach at the University of Maine, but it wasn’t long the administration decided she wasn’t good enough. So they called Blodgett and fired her, a no-class act. She did the best she could with what she had […]

Lachowicz good choice for state Senate

On June 12, Democrats in Albion, Benton, Clinton, Unity Township, Waterville and Winslow (District 25) will choose between two excellent candidates for state senator. I have been impressed by both and will actively support the winner. My strong support of Colleen Madigan Lachowicz of Waterville stems most of all from her longtime commitment and work […]

Peacox Production duo offers thanks, bids farewell,

My partner, Bob Peabody, and I wish to thank all the people who made Peacox Productions a fun, family-friendly group for the past 22 years. The community nonprofit groups touched our heart immensely, and we felt the warmth they showed us. A special thanks goes out to the Kennebec Journal and Don Brown of WABK […]

Don’t confuse ‘cause,’ ‘risk’ of getting cancer

Ron J. Stauble Sr.’s letter “Birth Control Dangerous and Misleading” was misleading in itself. In discussing cancers linked to oral contraceptive use, Stauble uses the word “cause,” whereas the correct term, as explained by the National Cancer Institute, is “risk.” The National Cancer Institute  (www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk) reports that use of oral contraceptives appears to slightly increase […]

Loan forgiveness would help recruit social workers

Social services are an ever-growing field in our economy. Social workers play a major role in an individual’s quality of life for populations of all ages. With the increase in need for services, especially with the geriatric population increasing, it would be beneficial for the government to offer loan forgiveness for social work students. Loan […]

Darrick Banda best choice for district attorney

I have been a police officer since the early 1980s, in central Florida and Aroostook County. I came to work as a police officer in Kennebec County in 1994. I have worked with Everett Fowle, Alan Kelly and Darrick Banda as prosecutors of the criminal cases I brought in for prosecution. I have a high […]

AARP volunteers helped 20,000 file tax returns

I would like to express my appreciation to the almost 300 Mainers who volunteered for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program this year. During the last 12 weeks of tax season, the Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 20,000 Mainers file their tax returns and answered questions for many others. In addition to IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers, the […]

    GOP presidents increased federal employees

Last month I provided evidence of the Republican Party’s specious policy of trickle-down, voodoo economics. Now let’s look at another cherished and specious Republican claim, heard over and over again each election cycle and almost daily from Republican legislatures — smaller government. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, total nonmilitary federal employee numbers […]
