Other’s neglect could havemeant tragedy for driver

On Wednesday, Nov. 16 -- a rainy, foggy night -- my daughter was on her way to her night job in Augusta. At some point on Route 27, she saw something in the road and tried to avoid it. In doing so she lost control of her vehicle and went into a ditch. Air bags deployed, but the seat belt broke loose throwing her into the passenger seat, where her head and shoulder broke the window. Her wrist was mangled from broken glass. Five cars went by -- no one stopped. She was able to call for help on her cellphone. The first to arrive was Trooper Diane Vance. I want to thank her for making my daughter as comfortable as possible until the ambulance arrived. Come to find out it was three tarps in the road. Someone was very neglectful about tying these down. Thank God my daughter had no broken bones, but she did have massive bruises. She will be a long time healing but I'm so glad I still have her!

Where is outrage at supercommittee surrender?

I am so upset that the supercommittee just gave up — the final straw that proves our government is in complete disarray. Everyone, whether a Democrat or a Republican, should be very unhappy with the people who are supposed to represent our interests. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and Reps. Chellie Pingree and Michael […]

Receive welfare, but conditional on testing, help

As a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, I am not opposed to drug and alcohol testing for welfare recipients. Toxicology screening is used in a wide variety of settings where the public interest is involved. The rationale in each case is that the public interest outweighs privacy concerns. In the case of welfare recipients, the […]

Schools proud of their flags, honor the country

In response to the article “Law requires chance to pledge,” (Nov. 21) I would like to offer a few additional thoughts and considerations. We, at Manchester Elementary School, are proud of our flags. Each day, our fifth-graders carefully raise the flag in the circle in front of our school for all to see, and then […]

Abolish MTA, have just one toll booth in Kittery

I cannot believe the amount of money and benefits the toll takers earn. I know people who have gone to trade schools and have to be certified by the state for their skill who don’t make that kind of money. Toll taking is a $10 per hour job at best and as for their health […]
