    Bible interpretation misses the mark

    In my opinion, people who quote/reference Scripture in a letters forum like this are setting themselves up as prophets; and the Rev. Jeremy Hiltz, in his letter ("Obamacare exemplifies the way of Satan," Aug. 3) engages in the very sort of well-intentioned false prophecy denounced in the 10th chapter of John's gospel.

    Your fine housing-highway bill editorial in the Aug. 6 paper ( "Housing-highway bill's filibuster another black eye for Congress") made me think of the recent remark by Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell's Democratic opponent, Allison Lundergan Grimes.

    Pastor’s letter doesn’t sound like Jesus’ teachings

    I have read many criticisms of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in the Readers' Opinions, but never one so distorted and misguided as the one written by the Rev. Jeremy Hiltz in the Aug. 3 newspaper ("Obamacare exemplifies the way of Satan").

    Calling it ‘Obamacare’ makes letter political

    By calling the Affordable Care Act, "Obamacare" Jeremy Hiltz (letter, "Obamacare exemplifies the way of Satan," Aug. 3) is making a political statement and not a religious one. The prototype for this act was written by Republicans in Massachusetts.

    Misconceptions give Maine’s bats a bad rap

    A family friend posted on Facebook one morning that after waking up to a strange noise in her apartment, she discovered a bat flying about. Horrified, she hunkered down on a stairwell under a blanket until the creature flew out an open window. In her words, she was "completely traumatized."
