Antique auto inspection bill a very bad idea

Money spent by lobbyists not given to legislators
As a former state legislator, I read with interest the article about the State House lobbyists in the April 28 newspaper. Unfortunately, the reporter did not make clear that the thousands of dollars spent by lobbyists does not go into the pockets of legislators.

Carton of cigarettes could pay for child to play ball
A letter writer on April 25 railed against President Barack Obama's budget, requesting to raise the cigarette tax "from $1.01 per pack to $1.95" further noting, "The state of Maine already charges $2 state tax per pack."

We don’t need more guns or people with guns
The 30,000 or so gun-related deaths (64 percent suicides, 36 percent homicides) that occur annually in the United States, suggest to me that up to 80 people on any given day, in the interest of public safety, probably should not have had access to firearms.

$20,000 for governor’s portrait not well-spent
In his last year of public service to the people of Maine, an official portrait of Gov. John Baldacci was made at a cost to taxpayers of $20,000.
