Maine shouldn’t abandon Common Core standards
I support Maine's adoption of the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. Maine is one of 45 states that have adopted these standards for K-12 students. Some people want to back away from these new standards. That would be a mistake. I am an educator with 30 years' experience teaching math in the public schools, including nine as an elementary mathematics specialist.

Every day thousands of our neighbors, friends, families and coworkers silently suffer from hunger. Instead of allowing us to help them, Congress is proposing cuts to vital programs that help feed families, children and the elderly. We can't let this happen.

Discretion, not threats, serves US foreign policy
Many of us longtime peace movement people are old enough potentially to hurt ourselves in attempting to pat our own backs. But it was our "No more!" message that finally convinced a critical mass of our fellow citizens to oppose American participation in yet another war -- in yet another dismal corner of the empire we can't afford.

Nation’s POW/MIAshould not be forgotten
National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It honors those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. It is one of six days that the POW/MIA flag can be flown.
