Federal law gives access for military recruiters
My family holds those who serve in the military in the highest regard. My father, Richard Duke Caron, is a Marine and served on the front lines in the Korean War; my son served with the U.S. Coast Guard; and I help plant 15,000 American flags by the tombs of fallen veterans every Memorial Day.

Kennedy breakdown lane in Oakland no parking lot
Several nights per month, I pass between 15 and 25 cars parked in the breakdown lane of Kennedy Memorial Drive in front of KMD Driving School (Oakland). I cannot understand why the Oakland police and town officials allow this to happen.

Attack on Katz not honest defense of LePage

Let’s return Maine to powerhouse status
Solvent government must be a priority. It serves also as an example to us. There will always be vote seekers who cater to those who want a soft berth in life. Divided authority can be a handicap to progress.

Renaming Social Security check a slap in the face
Let's suppose that, by some chance, our politicians decide on a 2 percent cost of living adjustment next year, and we get $1,000 per month in our Social Security check -- oops, sorry about that, a big boo boo on my part, it's now known as a "Federal Benefit Payment" check -- every month. That would amount to $20 per month increase for us, but that 2 percent would amount to more than $1,000 per month for our politicians.

Owners subject their pets to hot, loud places
During the Fourth of July week, I watched a spirited and well-run 5K road race and fireworks display at the Winthrop public beach. Why, I wonder, do people take their dogs to such events?
