Transportation key for a new beginning in Maine
A proposal for a commuter option between Lewiston-Auburn and Portland is being discussed, with bus and rail as the proposed options. I believe we should take this initiative as a new beginning for transportation in Maine.

If drunkards wrote the Bill of Rights, we’re lucky
I have some comments about Robert W. Vitolo's letter published Jan. 8. Our nation has persevered for some 236-plus years. The framers of the Constitution, deep in their cups according to Vitolo, demanding of innkeepers "another gill of hot buttered rum 'round the table," still managed to be sufficiently coherent as to create a most perfect blueprint for the people to control their government.

Why no arrest yet in shooting in Starks?
I see there is no arrest yet in the shooting of an unarmed man in Starks. As I understand the incident, three hunters approached an unarmed land owner and he was shot in the stomach.

EBT cards abused to buy less-than-nutritious items
Larry Davis' letter to the editor, "EBT cards should be used to help the truly needy," in the Dec. 28 Kennebec Journal, tells us about a guy observed in a local convenience store buying beer, smokes and lottery tickets with an EBT card.

Thanks for the third-grade community walking tour
At the end of last year, the Winthrop Grade School's third-grade classes embarked on a community walking tour that brought them to many locations. They visited a wide range of places, including the police station, the Bailey Library, the Flaky Tart cafe, a bank and several others. This was a wonderful activity that brought school and community together, and allowed the students a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of some of the cornerstones of their town.
